Extra Information
_Where and how does a cyclone form?
Tropical cyclones are formed over the ocean in the area around the equator, usually between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
In order for a cyclone to form, the ocean water must be warm, at least over 25 degrees. If there is low air pressure where clouds are formed it pulls them in, which causes them to rotate/spin. It is the Earth’s rotation and the spinning on an axis that causes the clouds to rotate. In this stage spinning winds can develop mature cyclones, but it can still increase it’s size and wind speed.
How often do they occur in Australia?
The cyclone season in Australia is between November and April, but cyclones can still occur in May. According to the Bureau of Meteorology of Australia, Australia has an average of 13 cyclones a year. Half of these occur in Western Regions.
Where in Australia does cyclones occur most?
Cyclones usually appear near the North East coast of Australia. It forms above the waters, and moves towards inland as it grows bigger and bigger. Cyclones usually appear in Queensland, the North and North East of Australia.
Monitoring the Process of Cyclone Larry
Every hour high resolution images are being sent to Earth from space. When a cyclone approaches the coast, it can be monitored closely by the weather watch radar. The radar detects the intensity of the rain from the strength of the echoes of the radar pulse.
