Floods and Rains causes by Cyclone Larry
An active monsoon across Northern Australia contributed rainwater well above the average rainfall of Northern Australia in March. Rapid river rises started, when heavily rain occurred on the 20th of March 2006. The highest 3 hour rainfall was recorded a total of 139mm, causing major flooding in Mulgrave River. During the day the Mulgrave River hit it's peak water level of 15.2m. This was one meter above the Bruce Highway Bridge.
Roads and train services were disrupted for several days due to flooding. The highest rainfall in Tully River catchment was recorded 500mm in 72 hours. Water levels in both the Tully River and Murray River rose slowly and major flood levels over topped the Bruce Highway from 21 to 24 March.
